York Theatre Royal is looking for around 80 adults, two teams of 12 young people (aged 10-15), a choir and backstage staff to join the company of next summer's community theatre epic His Last Report (July 19-August 3), which focuses on the life and legacy of Seebohm Rowntree, one of York’s most influential figures.

Local writers Misha Duncan-Barry and Bridget Foreman delve into the life and legacy of pioneering social reformer Rowntree and his groundbreaking investigation into the harsh realities of poverty. Seebohm’s findings illuminated the struggles of the working class, laying the foundation for the welfare state.

Theatre creative director Juliet Forster, who is co-director of His Last Report, said: “From the outset we’ve been keen to ensure our next community production is a real collaboration with local people.

"We’ve already had help identifying the play's focus, and support researching the history of the period and potential characters. We are now very excited to open up the volunteer opportunities for cast, choir and wardrobe and give more people the chance to get involved, on and off stage."

Paul Birch, who is artistic director of co-producers Riding Lights Theatre Company, said: “York has been making extraordinary community plays for hundreds of years. Even if you haven’t acted before, this is the perfect opportunity to try something different, meet new people and learn some new skills. Everyone's welcome!”

Volunteers for the cast can express interest here (general cast) and here (cast aged under 16) before January 8. Introductory workshops will take place in January - no experience required.

Volunteers for the choir and wardrobe team can register here (choir) and here (wardrobe) before January 22. Rehearsals start from April 21.

Opportunities for volunteers to help with stage management, lighting, props, marketing, fundraising and front-of-house will be announced in the New Year.
