Theatre by the Lake seeks volunteers

True Steel - local people can sing in the show

Keswick's Theatre by the Lake is looking for volunteers for a choir to take part in new play Steel, at the venue's Studio (October 3-9), followed by a short tour of the Cumbrian west coast.

In a town once rich with coal seams, community and carnivals, James and Kamran are fed up with feeling different – tonight they’re painting the town Technicolor.

The play looks at first loves, forging identities and the wild hearts of teenage boys, and will feature a choir made up of local voices, who will work with a composer to create an original song inspired by the coast.

TBTL is looking for people who enjoy singing and meeting new people and are interested in exploring the identity of Workington, its steel heritage, and life on the west coast today.

Writer Lee Mattinson said: "This is a play about Workington, which asks what hope looks like in a deindustrialised landscape left to rot behind the fells.

"It is also a play about its people – their brilliance and complexities, ambitions and insecurities. And so it feels right that the final moment of the show is theirs – the community choir responds to its central questions with a collectively-written song. I already know it’s going to be the best scene."

The choir will rehearse on Wednesdays from July 3-September 25, at The Carnegie in Workington before recording the piece that will feature in the finale. They will also perform the song live as part of TBTL's 25th birthday party celebrations and at two special performances at the Carnegie (November 2-3).

The tour also goes to The Centre, Maryport; The Beggars Theatre, Millom; the Florence Arts Centre, Egremont, and The Carnegie.
