The sideways comic genius of Spike Milligan...

Comedy genius Spike Milligan is reincarnated alongside the rest of the The Goons in new play Spike at Blackpool Grand (November 15-19).

Co-written by Ian Hislop (BBC’s Have I Got News For You and editor of Private Eye) and writer and satirical cartoonist Nick Newman - and rave-reviewed when premiered at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury, in February - the play delves into the inner workings of a unique and brilliantly irreverent comedy mind.

It’s the booming 1950s and Britain is in the clutches of Goonmania as men, women and children across the country scramble to get their ear to a wireless for another hilarious instalment of The Goon Show.

While Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers get down to the business of becoming radio celebrities, fellow Goon and chief writer Spike Milligan finds himself pushing the boundaries of comedy... and testing the patience of the BBC hierarchy.

Will Spike’s obsession for finding new forms of comedy elevate The Goons to soaring new heights - or will the whole thing come crashing down with the stroke of a potato peeler? History knows the answer to that one...
