Rated by many the greatest comedy in the English language, Oscar Wilde could well be rotating in his grave at warp speed as the interestingly named Say It Again, Sorry? theatre company puts its anarchic spin on The Importance Of Being Earnest at Theatr Clwyd in Mold (October 4-7).
An Edinburgh and London fringe success, the company's twist on the great classic starts when the actor playing Earnest fails to turn up. To save the show an unsuspecting audience member is invited to step in but things go even more awry as other cast members fall by the wayside and more and more spectators find themselves backstage for makeup and costume fittings.
Developed alongside the company’s unusual open-rehearsal initiative – audiences are invited into the rehearsal room to participate in the creative process – the company’s vision is for the public to recover ownership over creative power and contribute to the future of theatre as active participants, collaborators and decision-makers.
In this case the show is different every night, as more members of the public are encouraged to step into the spotlight and at times it seems there are almost as many spectators in the cast as there are in the audience.
