The Duke of Westminster’s Westminster Foundation has given Storyhouse in Chester a £400,000 donation to develop its young people’s programmes over the next five years.
The money will boost the award-winning work experience and training programme, which offers a range of skills in the creative industries. Former participants have included disabled young people, those at risk of homelessness and young carers.
The Young Leaders programme works with 14-25 year olds to develop transferable job skills and raise aspirations through volunteering and leadership training at the arts complex.
Projects have included designing, marketing and running events such as a Harry Potter Book Day in Storyhouse’s children’s library, and the nationwide Fun Palaces weekend.
As well as funding the Young Leaders programme, Storyhouse will use the money to employ a Young Storyhouse Officer, to support programme graduates into employment, further education or training.
The Duke of Westminster said: “Young people have been hit hard by the pandemic, as opportunities have quickly disappeared. It’s vital that initiatives like Storyhouse’s Young Leadership Programme continue running, to give young people the best chance of success as they enter the workforce. I’m incredibly proud that the Westminster Foundation is providing this long-term support.”
Storyhouse’s head of development Kate Mylchreest said: “The impact on individuals will be truly life-changing. We’ve seen some of the brightest talents emerge from this programme, and we’re thrilled to be furnished with the funding to continue the work.
