Contemporary dance company balletLORENT's new Snow White comes in two versions - one for children, the other for over 16s. Both are in versions retold by poet Carol Ann Duffy at Northern Stage, Newcastle.
The family-friendly accessible dance theatre version (October 31-November 3) is suitable for ages five and over and retains all the classic elements of the original Brothers Grimm tale: a jealous mother, a beautiful daughter, a magic mirror, a place of sanctuary in the woods, a poisoned apple and a handsome prince.
Narrated by Lindsay Duncan, directed by Liv Lorent, it features twelve performers, a specially-composed score and is an update of a 2015 show that received glowing reviews.
The "adult" version is Snow White: The Sacrifice (October 31-November 2), for which the familiar tale is turned on its head. Audiences are plunged into the tortured inner-world of the Queen, delving into the psyche of a desperate woman enslaved to her own harsh reflection. This version features 12 performers, costumes by Nasir Mazhar and Libby El-Alfy and music by Murray Gold.
Both shows will also tour, next spring, to venues including Doncaster, Darlington and Hull.
