Slicing through men's taboos with A Man and his Circumstance

Determined to face a manhood taboo topic head on - and help educate audiences about related physical health matters - is new, crude comedy A Man and his Circumstance, the latest from Edge Hill University drama graduate Tom Cain.

"It was at uni where my housemate told me she and her female friend had a conversation about the health of their female body parts.

"When she asked if lads have the same sort of conversations, I laughed. I went to an all-boys high school where being seen as tough and popular was the most important thing, so nobody would dare try and talk about the health of their male body parts.

"This attitude is still prevalent with other friendship groups, particularly when lads are growing up."

Tom's previous shows include critically-acclaimed Hillsborough disaster play 97+, seen across Merseyside and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival: "Now I wanted to create something completely different and decided to create a crude comedy, intended to educate audiences on multiple male physical health conditions, to encourage men to check themselves for health signs and seek support if they spot abnormalities."

The way Joel acts with his girlfriend, compared to when he's out with the lads, is pretty much as a completely different character. He is always trying to do the right thing as the play navigates friendships, awkward conversations, looking after yourself and looking out for others...

A Man and his Circumstance is at the Hope Street Theatre in Liverpool (January 30-February 1) and The Atkinson in Southport on February 7.

Charity 15 Square will be at the show's first night, to provide information on - to be specific - foreskin health conditions and how to resolve them without having to resort to surgery.
