The Royal Shakespeare Company brings the magic of the Bard to young people from this month with RSC First Encounters - The Tempest, a 90-minute edited version of Shakespeare's play about families, magic and forgiveness; all relevant for a new generation of theatregoers.
Designed to be an introduction to the delights of Shakespeare, it is aimed at youngsters aged 7-13 and their families.
When Prospero escaped Milan with his daughter, years ago, the chance to return didn’t ever seem possible. Now ruler of a magical island, Prospero has his chance: the King of Naples and Prospero’s estranged sibling, Antonio, sail close to the island. Will Prospero take revenge, or will all be forgiven and forgotten?
The RSC's director of creative learning and engagement, Jacqui O’Hanlon, explained: “Access to the arts in schools is at a crossroads, after being eroded over many years with thousands of young people denied the sorts of experiences we know have a positive impact on life.
"We believe the best way for Shakespeare’s work to be experienced by young people is through performance; live theatre and an arts-rich education are the right of every child.”
The show is at York Theatre Royal (tomorrow, February 24, 2pm & 7pm; February 25, 10:30am & 7pm); Hull Truck theatre, (March 11-12), The Studio, Bradford Theatres (March 19) and Blackpool Grand (April 28-29). The link below also shows links to other venues that may or may not admit the public.
