Following its successful premiere at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre's Physical Fest in 2023, the city's Tmesis Theatre is currently in the middle of the first UK Tour of Sealskin - an emotive interpretation of an ancient Celtic tale.

The story is told through the company's trademark mix of physical theatre, puppetry, sumptuous design and an original live score.

Sealskin is an old folk tale about selkies (large, seal-like sea creatures that can shift shape to human form). Every full moon the Selkies appear, peeling away their seal skin to dance freely in the moonlight. But one night a fisherman discovers their secret, and we see the betrayal and consequences that follow.

The show explores ideas of belonging, "otherness" and home; Sealskin combines Tmesis’s playful and killed physicality, puppetry, storytelling, incredible projection design and live original music. It is the theatre company's most ambitious production to date, with an ensemble of performers from Liverpool, Nigeria, Spain and Portugal, augmented by immersive AV design from digital artist Noel Jones.

The tour opened in Lancaster in September, with sporadic dates from Ormskirk to Portugal and Sheffield in recent weeks.

The show arrives for dates in Salford (at the Lowry, January 15-16), and Liverpool (Capstone Theatre, February 14), are there are new dates for spring, including ARC in Stockton-on-Tees (March 20).
