All-female, Chicago-based circus company Aloft comes to The Lowry, Salford (July 18-20) with a five-star reviewed experience - and a chance the get behind the scenes of the theatre and become part of the show.

Everything in Brave Space takes place in the Lowry's huge scene-dock, a massive space rarely seen by the public but highly appropriate for this immersive and innovative experience.

Brave Space - a celebration of female strength and power - received five-star reviews at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is now touring Europe, with The Lowry performances one of only two UK stops.

Brave Space starts as 250 yards of fabric on the floor and, with the help of the audience, grows into a massive world that includes inter-dependent acts of aerial arts, acrobatics, juggling and balancing on eight-foot-high poles. Each act is designed to physically draw spectators into the experience, sometimes helping to raise the tent, sometimes holding ropes that keep trapeze artists aloft.

Circus artist and director Shayna Swanson says: “Brave Space was created as an antidote to the horrors of the daily news cycle. It’s not a "safe space", but an immersive performance that requires the audience and artists to show up at their best, encouraging them to take care of themselves and those around them.

“I wanted to create a show that felt like the opposite of The Handmaid’s Tale - something empowering. I wanted to create the world I want to live in, even if it only exists for an hour at a time.”
