Marcus Jarrell Willis, artistic director of Leeds-based contemporary group Phoenix Dance Theatre, presents his first full-length work for the company since joining in 2022.

Inside Giovanni’s Room is inspired by James Baldwin’s ground-breaking novel, Giovanni’s Room, set in 1950s Paris, about love, sexuality, guilt and self-acceptance. Willis's narrative adaptation comes a year after Baldwin’s 100th birthday.

The writer, renowned for his writings on the African American experience, was told by his American publisher that his exploration of sexual identity and same-sex relationships could jeopardise his career. Today it is hailed as one of the most significant literary works of the 20th Century.

With a viewer age guidance of 10 years and over, the work contains themes of a sexual nature and depictions of violence

Willis said: “I've always been a huge fan of Baldwin’s writing, through his novels and essays and also his activism, and how he represented himself through his own humanity. That ties into my artistic vision for the company; I want to create dance works that represent and reflect our humanity.

“While the novel was published in 1956, his work remains relevant today. I think people can relate to it regardless of age or background.”

Performance dates: Leeds Playhouse, March 6-8; Northern Stage, Newcastle, March 19-20; Liverpool Playhouse,  June 5. The company will be performing an adapted version of Inside Giovanni’s Room for school and youth groups in Leeds on March 5.
