Opera North has appointed Leeds-born sitarist and composer Jasdeep Singh Degun as its new artist in residence.

The company’s new 18-month programme for a lead artist from a non-Western tradition is part of its commitment to diverse artistic decision-making.

Jasdeep's productive relationship with Opera North began as music director for Partition, a 2017 collaboration with South Asian Arts-uk for the 60th anniversary of the division of India and Pakistan. He went on to compose the sitar concerto, Arya, for the Orchestra of Opera North, performing as soloist in its premiere and tour in 2020.

He's currently working with baroque specialist Laurence Cummings as joint musical director, composer, arranger and performer on Orpheus, Opera North and South Asian Arts-uk’s ambitious reimagining of Monteverdi’s masterpiece brings merges South Asian and western classical traditions.

Orpheus opens at Leeds Grand on October 14
