The first world tour of multi-award-winning hit stage show Moulin Rouge! The Musical, will come to the Palace Theatre in Manchester from August next year (August 20-October 4). The only other UK venues so far are in London, Bristol and Edinburgh.
The stage musical based on Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film comes to life onstage, remixed in a new musical mash-up extravaganza.
As in the film, the stage show celebrates over 160 years of music – from Offenbach to Lady Gaga - featuring over 70 iconic songs – many from the movie, but also with hits released since the premiere over 20 years ago.
Set in Paris in 1899, we see a world of indulgent beauty and extravagance and the story of a lovesick American writer, Christian, and Satine, the dazzling star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. They fall hopelessly in love, only to be thwarted by the nightclub’s host and impresario, Harold Zidler and the Duke of Monroth, a wealthy and entitled patron of the club who thinks he can buy anything, including Satine. With his Bohemian friends – the brilliant and starving artist Toulouse-Lautrec, and the greatest tango dancer in all of Paris, Santiago – Christian stages a musical spectacular in an attempt to save the Moulin Rouge and win the heart of Satine.
The stage show won 10 awards at the 2021 Tonys - including best musical; an Olivier award, two Drama League awards (including outstanding production of a musical), five Drama Desk awards and 10 Outer Critics Circle award honour citations, including for new Broadway musical.
Carmen Pavlovic for Global Creatures, producer of the musical, said: “It's thrilling that the Palace will play host to the show next year as part of its world tour. Manchester is such a welcoming, lively and culturally vibrant city, world renowned for its rich artistic and musical heritage."
The cast is yet to be selected.
