New country musical Under the Mersey Moon is set to return to New Brighton's Floral Pavilion in 2026 with three special dates over the Valentine’s day weekend.
The show was a huge success on its premiere at the waterfront Blue Lounge earlier this year, becoming the performance space’s best-selling new musical, with sold out performances and standing ovations.
Due to popular demand the show will return to New Brighton, this time the 800-seat Pavilion auditorium, with performances on February 14 and 15, 2026. Local radio star Billy Butler and his actress wife Lesley Butler will reprise their roles in the show.
Under the Mersey Moon was created by Liverpool songwriters Jimmy Rae and Pete Davies and features 13 original songs, performed by a live band and cast of 12. The show tells the story of a man’s determination to follow his dream.
Inspired by his ailing grandfather, struggling Liverpool country musician Danny Rogers embarks on a make-or-break pilgrimage to Nashville, hoping to be discovered. Will he fulfil his dream? Or will it prove a very different journey of discovery?
Songwriters Jimmy Rae and Pete Davies are favourites with Merseyside roots and acoustic music fans through their respective duos, Tennessee Waltz and Good Intentions.
Liverpool-born Pete originally found fame, of a kind, as one of the subjects of Granada TV’s landmark Up documentary series, which has followed lives of Pete and 13 other people born in the same year, every seven years since 1964.
Wirral-born co-writer Jimmy Rae said: “We were blown away by the response to the first shows in February. Pete and I really believed in the script, songs and story and we had three packed houses and standing ovations at every show."
