York-based Wharfemede Productions' first go-it-alone show - previous productions were co-produced with other companies - is the Broadway musical version of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, at Theatre@41 in Monkgate, York (February 18-22).

Director Helen Spencer said: "Little Women is a character-driven musical with family and friendship at the heart of the story. As Wharfemede's first independent production, it was the perfectly-sized company and we are incredibly lucky to have some of the best performers in York in our 10-strong cast."

The show focuses on the four March sisters and their beloved "Marmee" at home in Concord, Massachusetts, while their father is serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War.

With a book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, and music by Jason Howland, it premiered on Broadway in 2005 and the most recent UK production was at Manchester's Hope Mill in 2017.
