Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane receives a new production at Keswick's Theatre By The Lake (October 21-November 11).
The writer of films including In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths and the multi-BAFTA and Golden Globe winning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, McDonagh first cut his teeth as a writer for the stage with this tragic-comic drama, set in County Galway (where the Londoner spent his holidays as a child).
The play received an Olivier nomination for best play and went on to win four Tonys on Broadway. It's a dark thriller about a mother and her reluctant carer-daughter living in a remote cottage, trapped together in a poisonous cycle of daily battles. When an unexpected suitor for the daughter arrives on the scene, it sets in a motion a chain of events that build to an ugly climax.
Theatre By The Lake's artistic director Liz Stevenson – who directs Beauty Queen – said: "This is one of those stories that stays with you."
TBTL's autumn season also features visiting companies in events from gig musicals to talks, film, comedy, family-friendly shows and drama.
