A scene from Bradford City of Culture's fantasy world, Grue

Immersive dream-like world Grue - created from sustainable materials by hundred of community members for Bradford City of Culture 2025 - is open this week for the half term (to February 23).

Housed in Damart Mill, Bingley, featuring live performers and inspired by the town's heritage, audiences can explore a series of fantastical landscapes as they embark on a quest through the mill's basement.

The scenery has been created by the people of Bradford in various workshops and has been built entirely from sustainable and repurposed materials.

Hundreds of local people have made over 1,000 items, including birds, fish, houses, grasses, flowers, faces and more.

Grue is the first event in Bradford 2025’s year-long Play programme, a series of events and playful interventions during the year. With almost 28 per cent of the district’s population aged under 20, Bradford is one of the UK’s youngest cities and the Play programme aims to ignite imaginations, encouraging visitors to celebrate creativity and the joy of play.

Grue has been designed by Steve Wintercroft, a Scarborough-based designer, visual artist and founder of Wintercroft, an environmentally conscious design company.
