Helen Boaden - whose 30-year career at the BBC included being controller of Radio 4 and the first woman to run BBC News - has joined York Theatre Royal as chair of the Board of Trustees.

More recently Helen sat on the council of the Royal Academy of Arts, and is about to step down as chair of Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre.

“I'm delighted and honoured," she said. "I have seen first-hand the impact of York Theatre Royal, both locally and nationally, and I am looking forward to working with trustees and staff as we embark on the next chapter of this important and historic theatre.”

Theatre chief executive Paul Crewes said: “The wealth of experience Helen brings is invaluable and will bring fresh perspective as we explore and redefine our work for the future – reimagining ourselves artistically and financially as a producing theatre at the heart of our community.”

York Theatre Royal has entertained theatregoers for over 275 years. The theatre strives to be innovative, far-reaching and active in helping its community to live creative lives and has an engagement and participation programme that is nationally recognised and admired.
