After a five-year break, award-winning Manchester-based Feelgood Productions is back with a revival of its 2010 success, Slave: A Question Of Freedom, opening at The Lowry in Salford (tober 9-12) before a UK tour that also takes it to Shakespeare North Playhouse.
The production, which was awarded the first Anti-Slavery Award by the Human Trafficking Foundation, begins in the 1990s, in the beautiful Nuba Mountains of Sudan, where raiders on horseback murder, abduct and enslave the children. Twelve-year-old Mende survives but is trafficked to London, where she escapes only to face a new struggle for asylum.
The play's original production notably included actor Lashana Lynch as Mende - these days better known as 007 in the James Bond epic No Time To Die.
Feelgood artistic director Caroline Clegg is again at the helm and the 2010 script has been updated in consultation with Mende and the Nuba community.
Anthony Steen, founder of the Human Trafficking Foundation, said: “At a time when myths and misconceptions about human trafficking and modern slavery persist, it's vital to raise awareness of the realities of these dreadful crimes.
"We would like to congratulate Caroline Clegg and Feelgood Theatre in continuing their invaluable production, especially considering how greatly awareness of modern slavery is still, 12 years after this play received its initial award.”
