Epstein Theatre - due to reopen

Liverpool’s historic Epstein Theatre is set to reopen after a deal to breathe new life into the historic city centre venue.

The Grade II listed theatre closed in June 2023, following a decision by the city council to withdraw the financial support that had helped to keep the 112-year-old venue running.

Now, after a £1m refurbishment, the Hanover Street landmark will welcome audiences again, with new leaseholders and a new management team promising a programme that reflects the theatre’s century-long role as the home of local talent, national touring productions, music, comedy and pantomime.

Test events will take place over the spring and summer before a full autumn programme gets underway, with a special Gala Night on September 19 featuring local acts and celebrities.

Ahead of that, around £1 million will be invested in extensive refurbishment, including remodelling the bar area and improving backstage areas.

The Epstein started life in 1913 as the Crane Music Hall, situated above the Crane brothers’ music emporium in Hanover Street. The venue was renamed the Crane Theatre in 1938, and in 1967 was taken over by Liverpool Corporation. Following refurbishment, the theatre reopened the following year as the Neptune Theatre.

A long-time favourite of local amateur theatre groups, visiting performers and comedians, the venue was closed in 2005 over safety concerns. When it reopened in 2011, following a £1.2 million upgrade, it gained its current name – the Epstein – in honour of the late Beatles manager, Brian Epstein.

Anthony Proctor, who was the theatre's manager and programmer from 2022-23, returns as general manager and theatre director.

“I’m thrilled, and really excited, to return to the Epstein and bring this historic theatre back to life," he said.

“I know the Epstein holds a special place in the heart of Liverpool audiences, as well as for generations of artists who have performed here. I can’t wait to reveal the first new season and launch it with a gala evening – on what would have Brian Epstein’s birthday."
