Premiering at Salford's Lowry Theatre (October 2-5), Danesha, by emerging Manchester playwright Stefanie Reynolds, is the latest from Mancunian theatre company Box of Tricks, a company that specialises in offering a home for playwrights to find their voice.
Stefanie is a mixed-race, working-class, neuro-divergent, queer playwright and TV writer from Manchester, who grew up as a mixed-race child with a single white parent; her play reflects her experience.
"I'm beyond thrilled and delighted that the world is finally getting to meet Danesha," she said. "I hope this play resonates with audiences, that people find the joy and magic Danesha brings, and I also hope you're able to see yourself and feel a little less alone."
After successfully managing to convince her Preston-dwelling friends, Danesha arranges a night out in Manchester and finds a suitable club. It’s proper, proper mint. Then she meets her - and Danesha’s whole existence falls into question.
Company joint artistic director Adam Quayle said: "In the current climate, funding cuts have hit the arts and education, so we're delighted to be touring new work that speaks to young people and ignites a passion for theatre."
After The Lowry, the play tours to Leeds Playhouse (October 10-12); The Arts Centre at Edge Hill University (October 15); Blackpool Grand (October 19); Chester Storyhouse (October 22-23) and Unity Theatre, Liverpool (October 26). It will also visit schools around the North West.
