Cheshire's Clonter Opera Theatre has bowed to pressure and cancelled its production of The Barber of Seville - even though it isn't due until July.
"In line with seemingly every other theatre, music festival, and even Wimbledon and the Olympics, we have reluctantly arrived at the conclusion that we have no option but to reschedule," said theatre bosses, adding: "No doubt this may not come as any great surprise."
Government advice is now that some institutions might have to keep Covid-19 measures in place for six months.
Ticket holders will be able to claim a full refund.
Though the theatre, near Congleton, will be closed until September, organisers are now working on a digital outreach programme, to keep opera lovers entertained during the closure period.
At present, theatre shows planned for the autumn will go ahead.
