Theatre enthusiasts get a different, even twisted, look at Charles DIckens' classic Oliver Twist from this month. Twisted! The Musical will make its debut with a tour of smaller-scale venues after opening on June 18 at Bolton's Albert Halls.
This original production continues the story of Oliver Twist 15 years after events in the novel, offering audiences a different perspective on the characters we know and love.
New developments, romances, and rivalries emerge and audiences can expect, says spokeswoman Nicki Beckinsale, a show that blends "all their favourite things about classic musicals with exciting contemporary twists".
"Oliver Brownlow's journey into adulthood is far from easy, and the narrative explores themes of empowerment, community, and the fight against oppression," she explained.
The intriguing continuation of the classic tale continues the original's themes of despair, love, and hope. When Oliver meets Jane Forsythe, a flower seller with a tragic past, he begins a journey of healing and standing up for what’s right in a violent, oppressive world.
The musical is by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Esler Burke, seen in Northern Ireland in 2019, and the 2025 tour comes from the new Anything Theatre Company, with music and lyric developments by Leighlou Harper and director Si Wall. The evocative music is arranged and orchestrated by Gregg Birrell.
The tour opens in Bolton with a special gala on June 18, with performances in our region in Colne, Barnsley, Bridlington, Halifax and Sheffield.
